Hidden RuneScape Messages

You can find lots of hidden messages and features in "RuneScape," including a Morse Code message in a particular music track, humorous item descriptions and actions, and messages in the notes system. You can trigger some of these by using an item in a particular way or at a particular location, or by writing specific phrases in your "RuneScape" notes.
  1. Item Messages

    • If you use certain items in a specific way, you will trigger a hidden message. Examples include using a raw herring on a tree, which gives you the message "this is not the mightiest tree in the forest," a Monty Python reference. Many hidden messages are pop-culture references: using the ring of kinship with a fire reveals glowing text, as in "The Lord of the Rings," which you can't read; if you do the same thing while dungeoneering, you will be able to read the text, which merely says "nothing interesting happens."

    Norse Code

    • "Norse Code" is one of the music tracks you can unlock while playing "RuneScape." "Norse Code" contains notes played on a high flute. If you write these notes out as Morse Code, with short flute notes as dots and long flute notes as dashes, you'll see that they spell "RUNESCAPE." The writers of the tune have exercised a little artistic license -- in real Morse Code, there would be longer breaks between the letters.

    Haystacks

    • If you search in a haystack, you may trigger a conversation about finding a needle -- a reference to the well-known saying "like looking for a needle in a haystack."

    Knock-Knock Jokes

    • If you knock at either of the large double doors of the western Varrock bank, a banker on the other side will respond, "Who's there?" You will then have the option of responding with various "knock-knock" jokes.

    Text Filters in Notes

    • "RuneScape" has a notes functionality which allows you to save short plain-text notes while you play. If you type certain phrases into the notes, the game's software will convert them into pop-culture references, obscure quotes or in-jokes. If you type "Orly?" the message changes to "Yarly," a reference to a long-running piece of Internet humor. "I am your father" will change to "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!," a Star Wars reference. If you type "R.I.P. Runescape," your message will change to "Wanna Bet?"
