How to Build a Hammer in Travian

In the online strategy game "Travian," the term "hammer" refers to a secondary city that houses large, high-level armies. Hammer villages generally function as a player's primary tactical base; in order to limit unnecessary resource consumption, they often consist solely of troop-support structures. The most efficient hammer cities have a resource distribution weighted heavily toward crops -- which players require to feed their armies -- and also house the maximum sustainable number of troops.

  Click on a vacant building site in your main town, and select "Hero's Mansion" from the pop-up list to begin constructing the building. Once the mansion is constructed, click on the building and select a soldier currently in the village to become a village hero.

  Click the "Map" button at the top of the game window to open the world map tool. Click on any empty oasis on the map grid to view its resource composition. Look for an oasis with fifteen croplands to maximize sustainable troop capacity.

  Click the "Found New Village" button to send your hero to annex the territory you have selected. Wait for your hero to arrive at the territory. The greater the distance between your hero's mansion and the target destination, the longer the hero's trip takes.

  Select your newly annexed territory, and click on an empty resource field to open its "Upgrade" menu. Examine the resource requirements for the upgrade under the "Costs" heading. Click the green "Upgrade" button when you have accumulated enough resource quantities to raise the level of the field, and increase its production.

  Click on the "Buildings" button to view the costs of prospective buildings. Construct the following buildings when you have accumulated the requisite resources: a flour mill, a bakery, barracks, a stable, a siege workshop, a marketplace, a hero's mansion and a tournament square.

  Continue to upgrade your resources fields until all of them have reached level 10, which is the maximum resource level for non-capital cities. Subtract your village's crop consumption number -- listed at the bottom right corner of the game window -- from the crop production number to calculate the maximum number of troops you can sustain.

  Click on your barracks or stables, and enter the maximum number of currently sustainable military units in your hammer village. When you have established a large army, open your world map and select a target territory for your attack. Consider travel distance, as well as enemy strength and location, when selecting a target. Then, click the "Send Troops" button, and enter the number of each troop type to send.
