Instructions
Write down a list of all the abilities you frequently use. This includes abilities that directly increase the damage you deal, such as Dark Transformation, Death and Decay, Blood Boil, Pestilence, Festering Strike, Unholy Frenzy and Blood Tap. Others are Empower Rune Weapon, Scourge Strike, Death Coil, Outbreak, Horn of Winter, Summon Gargoyle, Icy Touch and Plague Strike. This also includes utility abilities such as Mind Freeze, Death Grip, Anti-Magic Shell, Army of the Dead, Death Strike, Death Pact and Icebound Fortitude.
Arrange the abilities in terms of cooldown time and urgency of use. All abilities in your basic rotation will be on a short cooldown and should be used immediately as they become available, and as such should be on an easy-to-reach keybind. Similarly, abilities that are on a longer cooldown but must be used immediately when needed should also be on a comfortable keybind. Abilities with limited utility and abilities you would only use once per fight may be left not bound and clicked with your mouse instead.
Place your left hand on the keyboard in the position you normally use when playing.
Determine what keys you can comfortably reach without moving your hand away from its normal position. Since your right hand will be controlling the mouse, all keybinds should be within comfortable reach of your left hand. Easily reachable keys may include number keys up to 4 or 5 as well as letters up to R, G and V. Keep in mind that certain keys may already be bound to various game functions, such as "W," "A," "S," "D," "Q" and "E" for movement.
Identify an appropriate keybind for each ability. Abilities in your basic rotation should remain on the number keys; other abilities can be bound to letter keys. You can also use "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Shift" as modifier keys to increase the amount of available keybinds. In addition to binding an ability to "1," for example, you can bind three more abilities to "Ctrl" and "1," "Shift" and "1" and "Alt" and "1."
Associate each ability with the chosen keybind using the in-game menu.
Practice your keybinds on a target dummy. Adjust any keybind that is uncomfortable or hard to reach. Once you feel you are comfortable with your keybind setup, try it out in normal play.
