How to Create a Portrait in Baldur's Gate

"Baldur's Gate" is a computer RPG video game developed by Bioware and published by Black Isle Studios and Interplay Entertainment. It is possible for a player to use custom portrait images within the game. To use custom portraits, the player must have an image in BMP format and insert it into the "Baldur's Gate" root directory. In order for the custom portrait to be used, it must be chosen during character creation.

Instructions

  1. Creating the "Portraits" Folder

    • 1

      Re-install the "Baldur's Gate" software using the self-installer on the disk.

      Follow the prompts given by the installer. Enter "C:\Baldurs Gate\" when prompted for where to store the files. Do not use the default listed, which is "C:\Program Files\ Black Isle\". Follow the rest of the prompts given by the installer and restart your computer.

      Right-click on the "Start" menu in the Windows task bar. Select "Explore all users".

      Click "Local Disk" to expand the file listing. Select "Baldurs Gate" to open the root directory.

      Click "File" in the menu bar.

      Select "New," and click "Folder." Type the name "Portraits" in the box.

      Double-click the folder to open it.

    Transferring Your Custom Image

      Open the folder where your image is located in a new window.

      Right-click the image and click "Copy."

      Switch back to the "Portraits" folder. Right-click in the folder and select "Paste."

      Right-click in the folder again, and select "Paste." You should now have two copies of the same image.

      Right-click the first copy of the image and select "Rename."

      Type the character's name followed by L.bmp into the box. Example: "XXXXXXL.bmp."

      Right-click the second copy of the image and select "Rename."

      Type the character's name followed by S.bmp into the box. Example: "XXXXXXS.bmp."
