How to Beat the Warriors of the Nephilim on Diablo 2

Quest 5.5 of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction is a tough fight. The quest, titled Rite of Passage, forces you to defeat three mighty Nephilim warriors in order to prove your worthiness to move further in the game. While the three fighters are modeled on Barbarian warriors, they all use elemental magic together with their Nephilim might to make your battle as tough as possible. However it is worth persisting, because on beating the Nephilim warriors, you will receive a considerable bonus to your character's experience levels.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your character to Level 40 or so. You should be close to this level by the time you reach the Rite of Passage quest, but if you have use a lot of quest items to make your way easier, backtrack and gain experience. Rite of Passage should not be attempted until your character is at least Level 38.

    • 2

Ascend Mount Arreat. At the top of this mountain is an altar containing the Nephilim warriors. Don't activate it; set up a portal to take you between the Arreat Summit and the town of Harrogath. Assemble a generous array of health and mana potions around the altar by jumping back and forth between Arreat and Harrogath several times, bringing as many potions as you can carry and dumping them at the summit.

    • 3

Activate the altar. The three Nephilim warriors will announce their intention to test you in battle.

    • 4

Defeat Madawc the Guardian, the red axe-throwing Nephilim. Madawc has the longest-ranged attacks, so close in on him and focus your close-range attacks on him. Avoid his stun attack, as this can paralyze your character long enough for the other Nephilim to perform lethal damage on you.

    • 5

Defeat Korlic the Protector. This blue guardian hefts a long halberd. He won't swing it often, but when he does, his attacks pack a punch. You will probably need to use some of your health and mana potions by the time you are fighting Korlic. Stay out of reach of his long halberd and wear him down with ranged attacks and/or magic.

    • 6

Defeat Talic the Defender. This red Nephilim with a flaming sword is hard to defeat while flanked by his fellow guardians, but once you have him alone, his attacks are manageable. Talic's reliance on fast-moving whirlwind attacks make him hard to pin down with close-range attacks or ranged weapons, so use area-effect spells to do damage to him. Once you defeat Talic, the reward for completing Rite of Passage will be yours.
