Download the Respec Modification
Open a new web browser window on the Windows computer where Torchlight is installed. The following steps can be performed on a different computer if the computer that Torchlight is installed on cannot access the internet, but the downloaded files must be transferred to the computer where the game is installed before proceeding to the following section.
Navigate to the Runic Games Fansite website to download the Torchlight "Respec" Modification.
Click the button marked "Download".
Save the file the web browser attempts to download. It will most likely be called RespecMod.zip.
Install the Modification
Open the downloaded zip file. Most versions of windows can open a compressed zip archive. Older versions of windows may require a program like WinZip or 7Zip to extract the contents of the zip file.
Unzip the entire folder and file structure found in the zip file exactly the way it is into the folder "%appdata%\Runic Games\Torchlight\mods\" This directory name can be copy and pasted into the destination field in the program used to unzip the modification to make the extraction process easier. The %appdata% directory can also be located manually. The %appdata% folder is actually a shortcut for the AppData/Roaming/ directory that is usually found in the default drive (usually C:), under the top directory "Users" and a sub-directory that is named for the user who is currently logged in. For example, the exact path to extract the Respec modification to would look like C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\runic games\torchlight\mods\RespecMod if you are running Vista. Other versions of Windows may vary slightly.
The modification will be active the next time the game is started.
Find and Use the Respec Potion
Find a general inventory vendor in the game that offers the Respec potion for sale.
The vendor may carry the Respec potion after restocking if he is not currently selling it. Vendors restock when a character spends at least thirty seconds in town, leaves, then returns to the town and vendor.
Purchase the Respec potion.
Use the Respec potion to reassign the character's skill points.
