Navigate to the Diablo II Sector: Hero Editor download page (see Resources).
Download and install "Hero Editor V. 0.96" on your hard drive. This is the most recent revision of the Hero Editor application, offering full compatibility with the "Diablo II" 1.12 patch environment.
Open Hero Editor, and click "Options." Highlight "Normal Error Response," and then click "OK" to save your changes. This ensures your character profile does not become corrupted in case of a failed inventory update.
Select "File," then "Load" from the Hero Editor program toolbar. This opens a file browsing window in which you can locate your saved Diablo II character file under "Program Files/Blizzard/Diablo II/Data." Highlight the save file you wish to edit, and click "OK."
Click on the "Inventory" tab. Right-click any item in the Inventory tab to bring up a context menu. Select "Specific Editing Functions" to open the Item Editing menu. From this menu you can select options such as "Stats," "Magic Attributes," "Sockets" and "Quantity." Change these settings as you wish, and select "File," then "Save" to save your changes.
Click "Extras" at the bottom of the Hero Editor main menu; then click on the "Item/Character Create" tab.
Click the "+" button next to "All Items" to display an item directory. The directory is split into subsections for Armor, Weapons, Gems and Misc. Select the subheading for the item you wish to create or import, and then scroll through the available options until you find the item you want.
Highlight the item to be created or imported, and click "Save New Item To Picked Up." This adds the item to your character's inventory. You can then change the attributes of the item using the "Specific Editing Functions." When you are satisfied with your character's new inventory, click "File" then "Save" in the program toolbar to save the changes to your character. You can now load the selected save file in Diablo II to use your new items.
