Hints for Age of Empires 2: Conquerors

"The Conquerors" is the first expansion to "Age of Empires II: Age of Kings." It introduced 10 new units, five new civilizations, 7 new universal technologies, numerous civilization-specific technologies and a handful of AI upgrades. Making use of the new game-play features and understanding what the new units are effective against will help you complete the new campaigns or excel against other players.
  1. Utilize New Game-Play Features

    • The new game-play features in "The Conquerors" are centered around making micromanaging easier. When villagers construct buildings designed for resource gathering, they'll automatically start collecting resources in the area. This means you can select the number of villagers you want harvesting a particular resource, send them to build the building designed to collect it, and then leave them to their work. Build several resource buildings at a time, as close to their resource as possible to maximize productivity. Another notable difference between the expansion and the original game is that you can garrison military units in battering rams. This increases the ram's speed and attack, so it's helpful to have units garrisoned inside as well as some units outside to protect the ram.

    New Units

    • "The Conquerors" introduced a total of 11 new units to the game. Understanding their strengths and weaknesses will allow you to adapt to different situations. The Eagle Warrior is a fast-moving infantry unit unique to the Mayans and Aztecs. It has good attack compared with other infantry units and an increased line of sight, making it good for both combat and scouting. The Halberdier is an upgrade to the pikeman, and receives bonuses when fighting mounted units; take out cavalry and war elephants with this type of unit. Hussars are mounted units with an extensive line of sight. They're one of the best scouts in the game. The Jaguar Warrior is an infantry unit with bonuses against other infantry, unique to Aztecs. The Korean war wagon is a ranged cavalry unit with attack bonuses against walls; it is useful for breaching walls without taking damage from siege towers and castles. The Petard is a single-use siege weapon; it explodes when it hits something, so it proves to be not worth the cost. Spanish missionaries are mounted monks. They can't carry relics, but their movement speed makes them excellent at converting enemy units. Conquistadors are Spanish-only units that have a powerful attack that proves effective at close range, but is highly inaccurate from a distance. Turtle ships are Korean naval units. Heavily armored, but slow moving, they are good for defending your docks.

    New Technologies

    • Several new technologies are included in the expansion. The Herbal Medicine technology is one of the most useful ones. It causes units that are garrisoned in buildings to heal much faster, allowing quick recovery. Theocracy is useful if you use monks a lot, as only one monk needs to rest when a group of monks convert an enemy. Thumb ring is ideal if you utilize archers -- it increases their accuracy and firing speed.
