How to Play Guitar on a PS2

The "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" franchises have popularized the use of plastic guitar shaped peripherals for use in rhythm games. These games allow players to play a guitar on their PS2 in simulated fashion with colored buttons on the peripherals substituting for guitar strings. One or more players can then team up to play the lead, rhythm or bass parts of licensed tracks. While there have been many versions of these games on PS2, the basics of playing them has largely remained the same.

Instructions

  Insert your "Guitar Hero" or "Rock Band" game into your PS2. A full list of all available guitar games for PS2 can be found on the "Guitar Hero" and "Rock Band" official websites. A full list of all tracks included with each game is also shown so you can refer to this to determine which game will best suite your taste and style.

  Unplug the PS2 gamepad and insert the guitar peripheral into the socket where the gamepad was plugged in. The guitar peripheral connector will have an arrow symbol on it to indicate which side is up. Don't use force to insert the peripheral, as it should slide in easily. Insert the second guitar peripheral (if you have one) into the secondary PS2 gamepad port. If you are planning on playing solo or don't have a second guitar peripheral, this isn't necessary.

  Press the power switch on the PS2 to start it. Wait for the game to load and select the "tutorial" mode from the main menu. This mode will teach you the basics of how to play guitar on your PS2. Follow the onscreen instructions. When you feel you have mastered the basics, you can move on to one of the other modes.

  Select "practice" mode from the main menu in order to practice any of the songs on any difficulty. You can also select which parts of the song you want to play and whether you want to play it as lead, rhythm or bass.

  Press the color-coded button on the guitar peripheral that matches the color of the notes scrolling across the screen. Press the button combination when two or more notes are displayed next to each other on your screen. Earn "combos" by performing well and not missing any notes in a sequence. Start the "career" mode from the main menu when you are ready to face a harder challenge.
