List of WWE Smackdown Video Game Titles

The World Wrestling Federation television show "SmackDown!" first aired in 1999, and the first video game based on its programming, wrestlers and events was released the following year. Since then, the WWF has changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment, or WWE, and released a dozen "SmackDown!" games for multiple platforms.
  1. WWF SmackDown! Series

    • "WWF SmackDown!" which was released in 2000 for the PlayStation, lets players wrestler as WWF stars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. Prior WWF games had been created by Acclaim, but "WWF SmackDown!" was developed by THQ, which has gone on to create all subsequent WWF and WWE "SmackDown!" titles. According to IGN, "WWF SmackDown!" was "far and away, the best wrestling game on PlayStation." Later that same year, "WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role" also appeared on the PS. In 2001, "WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It" arrived for the PlayStation 2, introducing the series to the newer console and "finishing moves" customized to each wrestler.

    WWE SmackDown! Series

    • After the company's name change in 2002, "WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth" was released for the PlayStation 2. "Shut Your Mouth" included a wrestler-creation mode complete with customizable animations and special moves deemed "incredible" by a reviewer at GameSpot, who rated the game 8.9 out of a possible 10. 2003 brought the release of "WWE SmackDown!: Here Comes the Pain," which included wrestling legends such as Roddy Piper and George Steele as playable characters.

    SmackDown! vs. Raw Series

    • Since 2004, video games related to the WWE's two main brands have been united under one title. The first "SmackDown! vs. Raw" game was released only for the PS2. Starting with "SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006," each game in the series had a year appended to its title, and one game has been released each year. From the 2007 edition onward, "SmackDown! vs. Raw" games have been released for the PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360 and Wii consoles.

"SmackDown! vs. Raw 2009" introduced the Road to Wrestlemania mode, a story mode in which players could choose one of six wrestlers or tag teams and experience behind-the-scenes game events, in addition to the ones that take place in the ring. "SmackDown! vs. Raw 2011" includes a new universe mode in which the player's decisions and match outcomes affect the story line and a roster of more than 70 wrestlers, some of whom must be unlocked during game play.
