How do I Fix My PS3 Scrambled Screen When I Try to Play PS2 Games?

The Sony PlayStation 3, or PS3, is the first video game system by Sony to support high-definition, Blu-ray playback, wireless Internet and Bluetooth remote capability. The PS3 also has the ability to play PlayStation 2, or PS2, games, a feature referred to as "backward compatibility." Backward compatibility functionality varies by PS3 versions, as earlier versions of the system used a chipset known as the emotion engine, which was able to replicate the PS2 hardware almost perfectly.

Locate your PS3 model number using the PS3 system software. Turn the system on, let it fully boot up and highlight the "Settings" tab. Select "System Settings" and then "System Name." Write down the model number that is shown on your screen.

Use the model number to determine whether your PS3 supports backward compatibility with PS2 games. Websites such as the Playstation Support Site or Third World Geek have charts sorted by model number that indicate backward compatibility status. If your PS3 does not support backward compatibility, you will not be able to play PS2 games on it.

Download and install the official PlayStation 2 System Data add-on. Turn on your PlayStation 3 and allow the system to fully boot up. Using the controller, navigate to the PlayStation Store tab and open the PlayStation Store. Select "Add-Ons" and then choose "Disc-Based Games." Scroll down to the bottom of the menu and select "PS2 System Data." Confirm the download when prompted. When the download completes, press the X button to install the PS2 System Data add-on.
