The Best Strategy Games for PS2

Strategy games, both of the real-time and turn-based variety, provide video game enthusiasts with a series of challenging tasks and exercises in logic. While the PC industry has historically dominated the genre with popular titles like "StarCraft" and "Warcraft," a number of quality strategy games exist on the PlayStation 2 console, which often gets overlooked by the newer gaming systems of today.
  1. "Disgaea: Hour of Darkness"

    • "Disgaea: Hour of Darkness" begins with the main character, Prince Laharl, waking from a two-year slumber only to learn that his father has died and a civil war has broken out. Players must guide Prince Laharl in his quest to take control of the land he was once the heir to using strategic battle planning and fighting tactics.

    "GrimGrimoire"

    • In the real-time strategy game "GrimGrimoire" players guide Lillet Blan, a student in a school of magic similar to Hogwarts of Harry Potter fame. Players join Lillet as she continues to experience the same five days over and over again, learning new secrets each journey through and developing continually stronger units to fight off the enemy. "GrimGrimoire" received a score of 8.4 on a 10.0 scale from GameSpot, who called it a "creative, one-of-a-kind game that's a lot of fun to play."

    "Gladius"

    • Players guide a group of gladiators in "Gladius," a turn-based strategy game set in a fictional world not unlike an ancient Rome where monstrous creatures like ogres and minotaurs run rampant. The player begins by choosing between one of two main characters, and through a series of combat events, gradually builds a team that includes gladiators of various abilities and strengths, the goal being to win enough battles to achieve a reputation as the best warriors in the world.

"Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII"

    • Awarded a 9.0 rating out of a possible 10.0 by IGN, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII" was described as "the system's best strategy game to date" when it was released in August of 2003. As with past installments in the series, players take control of a fictional empire, managing the land, commerce, technology and repairs to create a kingdom worthy of making the rest of the world envious.

"Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity"

    • Released in May of 2005, "Stella Deus: The Gate of Eternity" put players in control of Spero and a small group of supporting characters charged with the task of saving Solum, the fictional game world. The game functions as a tactical turn-based role-playing and strategy hybrid, using action points to dictate character moves. GameSpy awarded it a 4-star rating out of a possible 5, calling it a "step up in visual quality for the genre."
