Recruiting Tips for NCAA Football 2009 on PS2

NCAA Football 09 is a college football game produced by EA Sports. It is available across the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles. Although each game features unique graphics and presentation, the same recruiting strategy can be applied to all platforms. Much like actual college football recruiting, success is dependent upon time and effort. The less prestigious the program, the more dedication and strategy are required.
  1. Strengths and Weaknesses

    • Before hitting the recruiting trail, players should familiarize themselves with the strengths and weaknesses of their respective schools. For example, if a school is a juggernaut in academics and fan base, but hasn't won a game in the past three seasons, it would not be wise to try to sell a recruit on the program's tradition or championship contender status. Recruits are most likely to commit to schools that are strong in specific areas of interest. A key to successful recruiting is to identify those players early, to avoid wasting valuable time and resources on a recruit with very little interest and likely to commit somewhere else.

    Keeping Players Happy

    • Each time a recruit is contacted, he will respond positively, neutrally or negatively to a sales pitch. It is never a good idea to leave a recruit angry. If the recruit's smile turns to a neutral face, it is best to stop that pitch and finish off the talk with a pitch to which the recruit has already responded positively. During post-season recruiting, a guaranteed way to leave the recruit grinning is to make a promise at the end of the visit. Whether the promise is playing time, a guaranteed national championship or a game in the player's home state, the player will always respond positively.

    In-Season Visits

    • The in-season recruiting visit is easily the most important aspect of signing a recruit. A poor visit may send the recruit running for the hills, while a great visit may vault a school to the top of a recruit's list of schools. First and foremost, the recruiting activities for the visit should pair interest from the recruit with strength of the school. The school should also make sure to win the game. Wins against rivals or highly-ranked teams are best, but a good old-fashioned blowout of a cupcake team works as well. Finally, recruiting visits are most effective in the middle and late part of the season schedule, as recruits are more likely to commit at that stage of the process.

    Realistic Targets

    • A major blunder for some players of NCAA Football 09 is that they attempt to recruit blue-chip athletes with a low-level program. While it's possible that targeting 30 of the Top 100 players may result in a middle-of-the-road school signing one, it also depletes the depth of a team and lets many three- and four-star players lose interest. At the beginning of the season, a school should sort the recruit database by interest. Identifying the caliber of interested players will help assess the type of talent that a school could project to sign. Players should try to stay within that range of prospect talent level, but not shy away from taking a chance on two or three reach players. In some cases, a five-star player on offense can make the difference between a poor team and championship contender.

    Target Speed

    • The way the artificial intelligence in NCAA Football 09 is designed, the most effective weapon on any team is speed. Whether beating a defense to the corner or chasing down a wide receiver from behind, speed is a difference-maker in the game. If top-caliber recruits are not interested in a player's school, the next best thing is to sort positions of need by 40-yard dash times. Sometimes, signing a one-star player with lightning quickness may result in more touchdowns and victories than a three-star prospect with better overall skills but less foot speed.
