How to Fix a Scratched PS2 Game With Vasoline

Like an audio CD or DVD, a PlayStation 2 game disc with cracks or gouges in its plastic coating might cause a read error when inserted into the console, preventing the game from being played. Polishing away shallow scratches and filling in deep cuts can restore the disc to a playable condition. Thrifty gamers can accomplish this without buying expensive cleaning equipment from electronics stores, relying instead on common household items.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton swab or soft cloth
  • Toothpaste
  • Vaseline (or other petroleum jelly)

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the damaged PS2 disc under a lamp or other light source with the disc's underside facing up. Check the plastic coating for scratches or other damage. An abundance of shallow scratches can give the disc a cloudy appearance.

    • 2

Spread a small amount of toothpaste over the end of a cotton swab or soft cloth--do not use a sponge, which may be too abrasive. Polish over the scratched or blemished area in circular motions, going outward from the center of the disc to the edge.

    • 3

Rinse the toothpaste off with water. Dry the disc with a soft cloth using the same outward, circular motions.

    • 4

Apply a small amount of Vaseline to the underside of the disc, rubbing it in with the tip of your finger. Once the disc is thoroughly polished, remove any excess Vaseline with a soft cloth.

    • 5

Turn on the PlayStation 2. Insert the disc and attempt to play the game. If another disc read error occurs or other playback issues persist, repeat the cleaning process. Commercial disc cleaners can also be purchased at some electronics and office supply stores. Products range from cleaning sprays and solutions to pre-moistened wipes. If neither method proves effective, the disc may need to be replaced.
