Anime Video Games for PS2

As a particular anime (Japanese animation) becomes popular, it may become adapted into a video game. This is especially true for action-oriented anime, which provide perfect material for a video game. Additionally, if the anime proves popular overseas, a localized version of the video game adaptation is likely to follow. While many of these licensed games appeal mostly to fans of the series, some casual gamers may find some enjoyment in the games. On the Sony PlayStation 2, known for its huge library of games, there are many anime adaptations.
  1. Dragon Ball Z

    • There are many video games based on the "Dragon Ball Z" anime, many of which are fighting games due to the show's action-oriented nature. On the PlayStation 2, the main "Dragon Ball Z" video game series is the Budokai franchise. The first three games are called "Dragon Ball Z Budokai" while the following three are called "Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi," all of which were released by Atari. Most games in the series received mixed reviews on the review aggregating site Metacritic, but "Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3" (2004) has the most positive reviews for recreating the style of the show right down to voice acting as well as having gameplay that could appeal to players who aren't necessarily fans of the show.

    Astro Boy

    • Developed by Sega's Sonic Team and based on the classic anime series, the action game "Astro Boy" (2004) allows players to fly around 10 different levels while assuming the role of the title character, a boy robot with super powers who battles evil robots to save his city. However, the game has mediocre reviews on Metacritic for being an incredibly short game that sometimes feels repetitive.

Lupin the 3rd: Treasure of the Sorcerer King

    • "Lupin the 3rd: Treasure of the Sorcerer King" (2004) allows you to play as the thief Lupin. The game features a variety of gameplay, including shooting, puzzles and stealth missions, that require use of disguises and other gimmicks, but on Metacritic, the game has mixed reviews. While the gameplay is fun and full of humor, many critics disapprove of the simplistic artificial intelligence and awkward controls.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

    • "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" (2004) is a science fiction action game based on the TV series as opposed to the popular feature film by Mamoru Oshii. The game, which supports up to four players, is a third-person shooter, meaning the camera is positioned behind the character as opposed to assuming the character's point of view as in a first-person shooter. On Metacritic the game has mixed reviews, with most reviews admitting that "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" is a by-the-numbers action game.

    Akira Psycho Ball

    • "Akira Psycho Ball" (2002) proves one of the stranger video game adaptations of an anime, recreating scenes from Katsuhiro Otomo's landmark film as a series of virtual pinball machines. Unfortunately, the game was only released in Europe and Japan, but you may be able to import "Akira Psycho Ball" and play it with a compatible PlayStation 2.
