Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance I &II
Arguably the best two player cooperative game released on the Playstation 2, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and its sequel, Dark Alliance II provides extensive, in-depth game play for two players. As the name might suggest, Baldur's Gate is a sword and sorcery, hack and slash style game where players can take up arms as a human barbarian, drow (dark elf) monk or several other characters, then advance those characters in abilities and prowess by completing missions in the world of Baldur's Gate. According to IGN, the Baldur's Gate series is one of the most popular among female gamers as well.
Contra: Shattered Soldier
Descended from the arcade days, as well as the Nintendo NES version, Contra: Shattered Soldier takes up where its predecessors left off by sending players on commando style missions in order to save the world. Gamers can employ the machine gun, flamethrower or grenade launcher to achieve their objectives and destroy everything in their path along the way. Prepare for a challenge, as unlike the "save early and often" features inherent in Baldur's Gate, normal mode on Contra: Shattered Soldier only allows three reincarnations before the inevitable "Game Over" appears.
Gauntlet Legends: Dark Legacy
Another reimagining of an old arcade legend is Gauntlet Legends: Dark Legacy. While similar to Baldur's Gate in theme and feel, Gauntlet is less story intensive as its platform peer. If mindless hacking and slashing is more your goal than character building and questing, Gauntlet Legends is the game for you and a friend.
Twisted Metal: Black
The latest installment in the car war battle franchise for Playstation 2 brings with a new slant on the two player modes of prior versions. In Twisted Metal's past, two players could only go head to head in the battle arenas, but could not join forces to take down Sweet Tooth, Darkside and the rest of the vehicular villains. For those seeking to take the road rage out in a virtual environment with machine guns, rocket launchers and flamethrowers, check out Twisted Metal Black's split screen co-op mayhem.
