Special Moves and Combos
Every character has a set of special moves, many of which use projectiles such as fireballs or throwing stars. As you become more familiar with the basic moves, try executing your character's special moves. Pause the game and select "Moves List" from the menu. Your characters special attacks will be listed next to the button combinations required to execute them. Practice executing special moves until you can perform them with ease. Also, practice the combo attacks listed in the Moves List. Combo attacks perform a series of consecutive attacks on your opponent. Successful combos inflict a lot of damage and are important to any attack strategy. Your opponent will also use combos against you; if you find yourself trapped in your opponent's combo, press the directional pad in the direction of your opponent and press "R2" to execute a combo breaker and disrupt your opponent's combo. You can use up to three combo breakers per round.
Combat Strategies
One-on-one fighting is the heart of Mortal Kombat. Generally, you should base your strategy on basic attacks and combos, peppered with a few special moves. Special moves can inflict a lot of damage, but they also leave you vulnerable to a counterattack. Use them sparingly. Try to land some successful combos. Move into the background or foreground to evade your opponent's attacks. Keep on the move and keep on the offensive. Never give your opponent any breathing room. Do not use all your combo breakers early in the round, since you may need them later on. Use attacks that inflict damage both high and low, to minimize your opponent's chance of defending.
Battle Arenas
Every Battle Arena has important properties that you should consider when fighting. Most arenas have multiple floors or rooms, and can allow you to knock your opponent through a wall or ceiling to reach a different part of the level. Some levels contain powerful hidden weapons that you can pick up. Most importantly, some levels contain death traps, such as spike pits or lava pools. If a character is knocked into the death trap, he will die and lose the round. Traverse the arenas with caution. Try to maneuver your character away from death traps and force your opponent into one.
Fatalities
Every Mortal Kombat game allows players to maim their opponents with Fatality moves at the end of the match, and Mortal Kombat Deception has some of the most gruesome Fatalities in the series. After you have won the match, you have a short window of time in which to perform a Fatality move. Also, a defeated player may perform a Hara-Kiri suicide move, robbing his opponent of the chance to perform a Fatality. Consult the Moves List for your character's Fatality moves.
