Who are the Heroes?
Solid Snake, a super-soldier clone, and Raiden, a spy, are the heroes. Their allies are the Colonel (Raiden's superior), analyst Rosemary, computer expert Otacon, bomb expert Peter Stillman and Mr. X (a ninja).
Who are the Villains?
The villain is Solidus, leader of the Sons of Liberty. Assisting him are mercenaries Olga and Revolver Ocelot, and a terrorist group called the Dead Cell.
What is the Setting?
The game takes place in 2009 aboard an off-shore facility near New York.
Why are they Fighting?
Raiden is sent to the off-shore facility to rescue the President from the Sons of Liberty, who threaten to kill him and unleash an environmental disaster if their demands are not met. The facility is actually a cover for a new Metal Gear called Arsenal Gear.
The President's Revelation
Raiden frees the President, who reveals the kidnapping was orchestrated by "The Patriots," a secret group controlling the government. Before they can escape, the President is killed by Revolver Ocelot.
Fight for Arsenal Gear
Raiden and Snake must destroy Arsenal Gear before Solidus takes control of it, launches a nuclear strike and uses what is left of the country to fight the Patriots, which he sees as the true enemy. Raiden disables Arsenal Gear, kills Solidus, and he and Snake set out after Ocelot and the Patriots, who escaped.
