Fight a lot. One of the new elements to Final Fantasy XII is the battle system, which takes place in real time. You will be controlling one character and the other characters will take actions automatically either by command or by gambits. Fighting is how you earn license points, experience and goodies like equipment and money. There are no random battles in Final Fantasy XII, so you have to go looking for the fight.
Figure out the gambit system. Gambits can be your best friend in FFXII but they are also quite confusing at first, so spend some time early on figuring them out. Gambits allow you dictate what the two other characters in your party that you are not playing are doing during battle. For example, you can have a gambit that causes your healer to cast a healing spell when anyone falls below 50 percent health.
Learn the licensing system. Licensing determines what equipment, magicks and technicks (yes that is how they are spelled in FFXII) you can use in the game. You earn LP, or licensing points, through battle. Once you acquire a certain license, you then have to go and purchase the equipment, magicks or technicks that you are now licensed for. So acquiring the license for a fire spell doesn't mean you automatically have it, instead you still have to go buy it.
Sell your stuff. Most of the loot you will pick up serves no purpose other than to make you money from vendors. Money is not as easy to come by in Final Fantasy XII as it has been in other Final Fantasy games, so you need to constantly be battling and selling to keep your money level up. You want money because you have to buy equipment as well as magicks and technicks.
Use your magicks. Magic points, or MP, rejuvenate as you walk around, so when you have to choose between using magicks and items, opt for magicks. Magicks are also going to be necessary for winning many battles, both early on and later in the game.
Turn on Libra and leave it on. Libra is a technick that you learn early on that will let you see the stats of enemies. This will help you know how to attack an enemy, what the enemy may do to you, how much health the enemy has and if an enemy is too much for you to take. Libra is an essential technick.
Try not to neglect Espers. Espers in FFXII are similar to summons in other Final Fantasy games. Some players consider them about useless in FFXII, and it can be easy to fall into that idea, but they do have purpose. Espers are difficult to obtain because you have to beat the Esper in a battle. You are not going to be able to rely on them completely, but they are helpful so don't overlook them.
