Unlock Shingen by completing Yukimura Sanada's story mode.
Try your best to win deadlocks! Shingen's deadlock winning move is one of the coolest and best. Not only does he smack your opponent something fierce, he flips them up into the air, causing them to splash down and damage any nearby enemies. Tap that square button like mad!
Bring it on! Shingen has the highest maximum defense of any character in the game, both ranged and melee. Instead of giving him Himiko's Rune and the Cloak of Might, consider spending his item slots on items like the Power Bracer, Musou Stone and Vixen Tail.
Get the Matsukaze! Perhaps because he is one of the heaviest hitters in the game, Shingen is also one of the slowest, right next to Goemon. The tengu sandals do nothing; he needs a horse. The only decent choice is of course the best: the Matsukaze. You'll be a lot happier with him on a horse.
Swat the flies! Once you've got the Matsukaze saddle, you might as well just leave Shingen up there. His mounted attack is only slightly lower than his normal attack, plus you get the benefits of actually getting to places and being able to smack people with the Matsukaze.
Give him Reach! Boost Shingen's Reach skill as soon as possible. It will greatly assist with his musou attack and his regular attacks.
Juggle away! Shingen's first charge attack flips the enemy up into the air, allowing you to hit them more, and again when they land! This works wonders against enemy officers!
Enjoy his second charge attack! It is quite amusing to watch a master strategist go charging into the enemy and start head-butting them. Not a bad attack, either.
