How to Troubleshoot a PlayStation 2 Game Format Disk

Superficial scratches on PlayStation 2 discs have little to no effect on the CD, but deeper scratches can prohibit a game from starting on the console. If you're receiving an error that asks for a formatted version of the game disc, then the console is not reading the disc properly. This can be caused by either the PlayStation 2 or the actual disc you are inserting into the console.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a different disc into the PlayStation 2. If you receive the same error, your system's disc reader has failed and will more than likely need to be repaired by Sony. If the disc boots up properly, you will need to repair the previous disc that was giving the error.

    • 2

Clean the disc by running warm water over it. Using only warm water, you can clean out any debris in a scratch that may prevent it from playing. Take care to gently dry off the disc completely, as putting a wet disc into the console can severely damage your console.

Repair the disc by taking it to a commercial store, such as Hastings or Blockbuster. Many game and movie rental stores also offer the service of repairing any scratched discs. This can provide both a short and long-term solution to your problem by repairing the disc back to its condition when you first opened its case.
