How Concurrences Work on Final Fantasy XII

Like in all "Final Fantasy" games, there is a special, powerful attack that the characters perform. In "Final Fantasy XII," the attack is Mist Charge. Each character performs a succession of special attacks, called Quickenings, which build up to an even more powerful attack, called Concurrence. The strongest Concurrence attacks include Ark Blast, Luminescence, and Black Hole. Using these attacks require a step-by-step process mid-battle.
  1. Quickenings

    • The first step to performing a Concurrence in "Final Fantasy XII" is to learn Quickenings. Each character in the game can learn three Quickenings, which are available on the license grid. Each Quickening uses a certain number of Mist Charges, up to three. The characters earn a Mist Charge every time they learn a Quickening, for a maximum of three Mist Charges. A Quickening that uses one Mist Charge is called level 1, two Mist charges is level 2, and three is level 3. To perform a Quickening, and begin the Concurrence process, select Mist Charge on the battle menu during a battle, and then choose an available Quickening.

    Chains

    • The next step in performing a Concurrence is to build up chains. Chains are how many times the characters perform Quickenings before time runs out. During a Quickening, a bar quickly diminishes and the player must select a new option before the bar empties. The list of options is on the lower right of the screen. Each character in battle is assigned a button on the controller. When the player presses the button, the character will either perform another Quickening or replenish their Mist Charges, based on the listed option. The options will change after each Quickening.

    Concurrence

    • A Concurrence happens automatically when time runs out during a Quickening chain. Which Concurrence depends on the number of Quickenings during the chain. For example, if the characters perform eight level 1 Quickenings, the Concurrence will be Cataclysm. Wind Burst requires six level 2 Quickenings and Whiteout requires five level 3. The most difficult Concurrences, and the most powerful, require a combination of Quickenings. For example, Black Hole, the strongest Concurrence, requires four level 1, four level 2, and four level 3 Quickenings in one chain.

    Tips

    • To build up a high chain, make sure every character has all three Mist Charges filled before beginning. Choose a level 1 Quickening first, and continue to have that same character perform Quickenings for as long as possible. By choosing a level 1 Quickening first, the character will still have two remaining for more Quickenings. If a Mist Charge option pops up, always choose that, and then continue with Quickenings. The Mist Charge option replenishes all three Mist Charges. Jump to a new character once the first has used up all his/her Mist Charges and Mist Charge has not popped up in the options. Repeat with that character before moving on to the last. If it is not possible to select a Quickening or Mist Charge, hit R1 to shuffle the options.
