Types of Enemies in Persona IV

"Shin Megami Tensei: Persona IV" was widely hailed as the PlayStation 2's swan song when it was released in 2008. The game takes place in modern-day Japan, and revolves around a group of teenagers trying to solve a series of gruesome murders in the rural town of Inaba. Your party will delve into a variety of dungeons throughout the game, each one different from the other and each one containing a series of unique enemies. The enemies fall into categories.
  1. Small Fry

    • These are the most basic enemies you'll come across in dungeons, and they make up the bulk of foes you'll encounter in "Persona IV." Small monsters or enemies are typically easy to beat, especially once you've discovered their elemental weakness. They can come in almost any form, appearing as everything from overly aggressive tables to rambunctious cupids to Hulk Hogan-esque bodybuilders. These enemies yield the bulk of your experience and items once you defeat them.

    Minibosses and Big Enemies

    • Every dungeon you encounter in "Persona IV" has a miniboss about halfway through that you will have to fight in order to continue. Minibosses may simply be larger and more powerful versions of monsters you have already faced in the dungeon -- the "Daring Gigas" in Kanji's "Steamy Bathhouse" dungeon, for instance -- while others will have a unique form all their own. Big enemies, on the other hand, are simply overlarge versions of standard monsters that have slightly more attack and defense power than their smaller counterparts. Any standard enemy in the game can also appears as a "big" enemy when you enter into battle.

    Scripted Enemies

    • These are not so much true enemies or battles as they are scripted events that you are meant to win or lose according to the needs of the story. There are only two scripted enemies in the entire game, one in the Marukyu Striptease dungeon, and the second at the end of the game when you discover the real ending. The outcome of these battles will always be the same, regardless of the actions you take.

    Bosses

    • Boss monsters are the strongest foes in any dungeon and are always the last monster you face before completing that specific dungeon. Bosses typically reflect an aspect of the dungeon creator's personality, whether it be the cage phoenix in Yukiko's Castle or the over-sexualized strongman in Kanji's bathhouse. You must defeat each boss monster in order to finish that particular dungeon and advance the story successfully.
