How to Transport a Chocobo in Final Fantasy VII

Chocobos, giant birds that look like a cross between an ostrich and a chicken, are a staple in most Final Fantasy games. "Final Fantasy VII" was the first in the series to allow players to raise their own chocobos. You can capture chocobos, tame them and transport them via airship anywhere on the world map once you've acquired the Highwind airship. This will prove especially valuable if you try the chocobo-breeding side-quest. Specially bred chocobos can walk across mountains and rivers and, by taking them to the right spot, will help you find rare materia not available anywhere else in the game.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Chocobo Farm near Midgar and speak with Choco Bill, the man inside the farmhouse. He will let you rent a chocobo stable for 10,000 gil. You can rent up to six stables, but you'll only need one to tame your first chocobo.

    • 2

Look for one of the grassy spots on the overworld map marked with chocobo tracks. There is one near the farm where you should have captured a chocobo earlier in the game to bypass the Midgar Zolom. Equip one of your characters with the chocobo lure materia and fight random battles by running around the tracks until a chocobo and some monsters appear. Defeat the monsters without harming the chocobo. You might need to feed the chocobo greens, which you can purchase at the farm, to keep it from fleeing while you battle. The chocobo will run away immediately if you attack it. You will be riding the chocobo after the battle.

    • 3

Dismount the chocobo and select the option to have the chocobo sent to the stables. It will go to the stables automatically.

    • 4

Return to the farm. Your captured chocobo will be wandering inside the fenced area outside the stables. Speak to Choco Billy, the boy inside the stable area, and he will let you move the chocobo inside your rented stable after he assesses the chocobo's quality. Your chocobo is now tame and will no longer flee after you dismount it.

    • 5

Speak to Billy again and he will give you the option to ride your chocobo. Select this and you will be riding your chocobo on the overworld map.

    • 6

Ride your chocobo to where you've parked the Highwind. Board the Highwind as usual by pressing the "circle" button on your controller without dismounting the chocobo.

    • 7

Fly the Highwind to wherever you wish to transport your chocobo and land the ship. You will still be riding your chocobo when you disembark. Note that you can see your chocobo waiting in the stables inside the airship if you walk around during your flight.
