Load up your "Final Fantasy X" save file.
Access any save sphere to initiate a Blitzball match. Simply press "X" while standing on a save sphere to open the sphere menu, then select "Blitzball" to open the "Blitzball" menu.
Arrange your team before starting the match. Use the directional pad to highlight different players. Press "Triangle" to inspect the status of a highlighted character, displaying their stats and available abilities. Press "X" while highlighting a player to add them to your team roster. Pay attention to the statistics for each player, and try to choose players with higher stat values. Start the match when you are satisfied with your team composition.
Use the analog stick to move the selected character around the playfield. Remember that blitzball is played inside a sphere, so movement occurs in three dimensions. The position of each player is displayed on the radar mini-map at the bottom corner of the screen.
Press "Square" to open the "Pass/Shoot/Dribble" menu. This menu will allow you to perform basic moves that can change position and possession of the ball. One of the most important aspects of winning a blitzball match is playing keep-away when you are in possession of the ball. Try to constantly pass the ball to different teammates to keep the opposing team on their feet.
Move within a few feet of an opposing player to enter an "encounter." Encounters allow you to perform special abilities that can turn the tide of the match. When you enter an encounter you'll be given two options "Break" and "No Break." If you choose break you will attempt to break through the enemy defenses. If you choose "No Break" you'll put up a firm defense of your own. Force encounters to set up favorable positioning on the playfield.
Use techniques by opening the "Pass/Dribble/Shoot" menu. Open the menu with the "Square" button. If your currently selected player has an available ability, it will appear as a selectable option on the menu. Abilities require the use of various resources during the match. You may need to kill some time before all your abilities become available for use. Abilities are the primary way to ensure goals. "Shoot" based abilities can penetrate the goalie's defenses and allow you to add valuable curvature to your trajectory. Use abilities when you have favorable positioning to ensure goals.
Push your advantage by consistently entering into encounters. This will force the enemy team out of formation. Every time you notice an opposing player that is out of position, use abilities to score a goal. Once you have scored enough goals you'll win the match. Continue tending to your team composition between matches to level up abilities and swap in new recruits. With the right strategy, you'll be able to win tournaments with ease.
