SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs II
"SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs II" is the success story of the PS2 networked games, attracting 60 thousand players per day at its peak, similar to other popular hard-core online shooters like "Counter-Strike" and "Halo." It is a military-themed shooter with an emphasis on team play, careful planning and objective-based game modes. The series has continued with two sequels on the PS2, two on the PS3 and three on the PSP.
Twisted Metal: Black
"Twisted Metal: Black" is the sequel to the multiplayer car combat series for the original PlayStation. It features individualized drivers and their vehicles in a fighting-game style. The fighting arenas are huge, sprawling and destructible. The game's developer, Incognito Studios, went onto make "Warhawk," an online-only multiplayer vehicle combat game, for the PS3.
NBA 2K11
"NBA 2K11" is an example of one of the many sports titles available for the PS2 that has an online play component. Since 2003, both Sega and Electronic Arts, the two leaders in sports video games, have offered online components for their annual NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL releases. "NBA 2K11" has an active online component.
Final Fantasy XI
"Final Fantasy XI" is the first massively multiplayer online role-playing game in the "Final Fantasy" series, produced by Square-Enix. It was released in 2002 and is especially notable because it is a cross-platform game. This means that PC, PS2 and (as of 2006) Xbox 360 players can play together on the same servers. Square-Enix released a poorly received sequel, "Final Fantasy XIV," in 2010. Because of this, there is is still a substantial player base on the PS2.
