Tips for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon on the PS2

Being successful at the 2003 PlayStation 2 game "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" requires a sound strategy. You'll follow the plot of the film as you progress through the game, taking control of movie characters Jen, Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai. The characters will increase their skills and learn new moves by using weapons or fists to defeat enemies. You can make the most of these abilities by mastering a few prominent game-play elements.
  1. Special Moves

    • Each of the playable characters in the game has an exclusive set of powerful special moves you can perform by pressing various button combinations. Throughout the course of the game, you can gain experience by defeating enemies and learn new special moves for each character by leveling up your unarmed and weapon skills. You can only perform special moves after grabbing an enemy by pressing the "L2" button. Increase your chances of a successful grab by weakening the enemy first, and then attempting to grab.

    Weapon Limitations

    • Three weapon classifications exist in the game: swords, spears and axes. Though powerful, axes and spears will limit your character's abilities while holding them. Your character cannot flip, sprint, glide or evade enemy combos while carrying an axe or spear. To regain these abilities, press the "Square" or "Triangle" button to put your weapon away.

    Maxing Out Skill Levels

    • Each character has a maximum level for his fighting abilities. Jen's skills have a maximum level of 30, Shu Lien's stop at 35 and Li Mu Bai can get up to level 40. After you reach each character's maximum level on a skill, you can't add any more experience points to it. If you've achieved the highest level on a skill, switch to a different fighting method to avoid wasting experience.

    Curing Poison

    • As you advance through the game's levels, the knife-throwing enemies will gain the ability to poison you if you're hit. The poison's effect will wear off after a short time, but if you're low on health you may want to cure the condition immediately. If you have an antidote or a restore item in your inventory, you can fix the problem. Press "Start," select "Items," and then highlight the item and press the "X" button to use it.

    Fighting Surfaces

    • Pay attention to any variations in height on the floors. Areas that feature stairs or sloped surfaces can hinder your character's fighting ability by making it difficult to grab or hit enemies. Try to keep your character's feet at the same height as your enemy's. If you run into trouble on a sloped surface, try to lure your opponent to an area with level ground.
