How to Back Up PS2 Games From Scratched Discs

PlayStation 2 games that are scratched bad enough are difficult to enjoy because they stop, skip and do glitchy things to interrupt game play. Unlike the game cartridges of old systems, like the NES and the Sega Genesis, you can't blow the dust off a scratched PS2 disc and expect it to work. You can, however, get a program that copies the game from the damaged disc to a blank DVD. Just make a copy, burn the game to a new disc and keep playing.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase game back-up software and DVD-writing software and install it on your computer. There are a multitude of applications that can be used to back up and burn your PS2 games, including Alcohol 120%, AnyDVD, Game Copy Wizard, CloneCD and some others. The program that you choose depends on your preference. Most of the programs can copy the game discs and burn them, so you shouldn't have to use two programs to get the job done.

    • 2

Start your game backup software and insert the scratched disc into the computer's disc drive. The program should recognize that a disc is in the drive and the name will appear in the program window.

    • 3

Use the game backup program to create a game disc image (ISO file) and save the image on your computer. When you're creating the disc image, be sure to indicate that the game is for the PS2 because PS2 games are encrypted with copy protection and the program needs to know this in order to include the encrypted information so you can play your new disc without having to install a modification chip in your console.

    • 4

Eject the game disc from the computer and insert a blank DVD ROM.

    • 5

Use the game backup program to burn the game disc image to the blank DVD ROM. When the program finishes burning the game to the disc, you can play it on your PS2.
