Move forward through the levels. The levels in "God of War II" usually follow a linear path with little deviation. You will not often be faced with a fork in the road. When you are, one path sometimes leads you to a dead end containing treasure chests and, after opening them, you can return to follow the alternate path.
Solve the puzzles. Sometimes play stops when you enter a new area, and the camera pans to reveal a hint for how to solve the puzzle and move on to the next area. Look for glowing white lights, as these are emitted by items you need, such as a levers and cranks you must pull or items you must pick up and move.
Fight your enemies. Sometimes the way forward is blocked until you defeat all the enemies in an area. Attack enemies with your weapons and magic. During attacks on some larger enemies, symbols will appear above them, providing hints for how kill them. For example, a circle will appear to indicate that an enemy can be finished with the "Circle" button. Making these special kills earns more orbs than normal kills.
Battle the bosses. Each boss has a certain type of attack it will use to try to kill you -- the Colossus slams its hand on you and Theseus lunges at you with his lance. These attacks usually have warning signs and hints, giving you time to dodge or showing you a button to press to counter the move.
Kill the bosses. After you've landed enough hits on a boss, you must play a mini-game to kill him. In these situations, the game typically reveals clues for how to finish the boss. Successfully following the pattern brings about the death of the boss, allowing you to advance to the next level.
