Damage to Console
Because many of the PlayStation 3 games are actually not in disc form, or are in disc form but make use of the PlayStation 3 hard drive, the GameShark device will cause changes in the hard drive of the device to make cheats possible. Although the GameShark may be specifically targeted at altering a certain game's code, it is possible that other hard drive coding can be affected, thereby damaging the PlayStation 3 console itself.
Damage to Game
The GameShark alters code within the game, and if the code is improperly entered or there is any type of glitch while entering the code, unexpected results may occur. Such damage could include nearly any unforeseen game alteration, but could include the game "freezing" at a certain point, or making the entire game crash and therefore become unplayable.
Warranty Considerations
Sony will not honor a PlayStation 3 warranty on any machine that has used a GameShark device, and that player's access to PlayStation Network will be denied in the future. The use of this device is strictly prohibited by Sony, and Sony further states that "Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 system terminated permanently."
Correcting Damage
It may be possible to correct damage to a PlayStation 3 console that was inflicted by a GameShark device. A PlayStation 3 console that is performing incorrectly or has stopped working after using a GameShark device should be taken to a PlayStation 3 authorized repair facility to determine if the damage can be reversed.
