How to Repair a PS3 CD Drive Laser That Will Not Work

When the BluRay drive of your PlayStation 3 stops reading discs, the PS3 is useless. Run a disc cleaner through the system, which you can buy at most electronics stores. These do a quick cleaning of the laser lens inside your PS3. If this doesn't work, the only choice is replacing the BluRay drive. If the warranty is no longer active, it costs less to do it yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • New or refurbished PS3 BluRay drive
  • Small flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Pry out the safety tab on the left side of the PS3 top. Remove the hex screw below the rubber tab using the small, flat-head screwdriver. Slide the case top off to the left, using force if necessary.

    • 2

Remove the seven screws from the next cover using the Phillips head screwdriver. Once all screws have been removed, pull the cover off from the back and lift it off the front.

    • 3

Release the power cord and data cable from the BluRay drive on the PS3 by first turning the drive on its side. Remove the screws from the circuit board on the BluRay drive. Disconnect the ribbons attached to the circuit board.

    • 4

Attach the circuit board to the new drive, starting with the cables and then using the Phillips head screwdriver for the screws. Attach the cables from the PS3 to the new BluRay drive and place the drive onto the mounts coming up from the PS3. Use the mounts as a guide to make sure that you placed the drive into the PS3 properly.

    • 5

Put the cover back on the PS3 by first clipping the front and then back. Replace the seven long screws that you removed from this section of the PS3 while taking it apart.

    • 6

Replace the top cover by sliding it from the left to right. Replace the hex screw and the rubber foot that you removed in the beginning.
