The Frontier Planet
Good news for the future; humanity has outstretched its earthly boundaries into the depths of space. Colonial hopefuls line for the chance to ride great ships away to untamed planets. The planet of Pandora is one such location, a wild world rich in mineral resources. When alien technology is found on other planets, the race to scour Pandora for any secrets it has to offer begins. Strip mined clean and blasted into a wasteland, the search appeared to be futile. The only souls who remain on Pandora are those who cannot leave, and those arriving with hopes that this treasure trove of technology can still be found.
Fortune Hunters
There are a total of four different characters to choose from when you begin Borderlands. These so-called fortune hunters each have their own unique play style. Mordechi "The Hunter" excels with long ranged combat, utilizing sniper rifles to attacks from afar. Lilith "The Siren" plays with a hybrid style of elemental control and stealthy assassinations. Brick "Himself" prefers a melee beat down with his foes, relying only on his fist and the occasional explosive device. Finally, Roland "The Solider" brings conventional combat to the field, favoring shotguns and rifles.
Gameplay
Borderlands appears to be a conventional first person shooter at a glance. There are few mechanics in its gameplay that are unconventional to the genre, however. As you explore the barren world of Pandora, you may loot weapons, gear and other useful items from fallen enemies. Each of the fortune hunters come with three different skill trees, allowing you to tweak your character to your own preferences.
Reception
Reception was generally positive, with most reviewers complementing the role-playing elements in the game as well as the loot system and combat. "GamePro" magazine awarded Borderlands four and a half stars out of five, holding a Metacritic score of 83 out of 100. Despite its warm reviews and popularity, "Borderlands" was also criticized for some of its flimsy plot points and a noticeable difference in quality between single and co-op player modes.
