How to Have a Successful Off Season in MLB 09: The Show

In Sony Computer Entertainment's "MLB 09: The Show," you have an option of entering the world of baseball as a manager of a major league ball club or as an individual player. When progressing through the game, the key element is to always try to improve either yourself or your players as much as possible. One key time span where improvements can take place is the off season. While the off season does not have the action that the regular season has, it is the best time to change personnel on your team.

Instructions

    • 1

Fire all of your coaches and turn on the training option. Proceed to hire new coaches for management, pitching, hitting, first base and third base. Be sure that your coaches in these categories have high stats, or your players might not progress to their potential. Wait one year to see the improved results in your players.

    • 2

Sign as many talented free agents to your club as you possibly can while filling out your roster. You must have multiple players that can play each position signed to a contract. Remember that free agents will take into account multiple factors when deciding which ball club to sign with, such as the location of the city, the likelihood they will make your team, and whether your club has a recent winning history. To help sway the decision of the players, you can attempt to offer them longer contracts with more money, although this is not a guarantee they will sign with you.

    • 3

Trade your under performing players. You might be able to free up money this way, allowing you to sign a free agent or you might be able to get a player that can help your club out immediately. Thoroughly check all the teams in the league to see which ball club would make a good trading partner for you.

    • 4

Draft talented young players to help your prospect pool. Try to draft based on the best player available as opposed to needing a certain position on your club. When drafting, make sure to choose a player with high potential, as they will be the most likely to make your club.

    • 5

Extend the contracts of the key players on your team. Players who have potential to be good or are stars in the major leagues should be given contracts that will keep them playing for you for many years. Release any players who have not lived up to expectations in order to free up money.
