PlayStation Eye
As of July 2011, the PlayStation Eye is the only camera manufactured and specifically recommended by Sony for the PS3. The Eye camera connects to the console via a USB cable and operates through the Eye Chat application for video chat and PlayStation Move motion-sensing games. The camera also comes with EyeCreate video-editing software for creating still photograph, video and audio files on the PlayStation 3.
PS2 EyeToy and Xbox
Sony doesn't advertise the Eye's predecessor, the PlayStation 2 EyeToy, as being compatible with the PS3, but the descriptions on some games at PlayStation.com, such as "Snakeball," list the EyeToy as a compatible accessory. According to David Dreger's report in a March 2007 post on Joystiq.com, the Xbox Live Vision -- manufactured by Microsoft for its Xbox 360 gaming console -- works with all PlayStation applications.
Webcams
Dreger also reports that any PlayStation 3 with a firmware version of 1.54 or later will recognize a wide range of third-party USB webcams. Most of these work with the PS3's video chat application, but not necessarily with the PlayStation Move games. Though any USB webcam should theoretically work with the PS3, those that meet Plug and Play specifications and don't require downloading additional drivers to work with your PC have the greatest chance of success. Experimentation is the only way to know for sure, however.
Digital and Video Cameras
The PS3 supports the transfer of digital video and still photo files from an external camera to its hard drive for use in its Photo Gallery and other applications. If the PS3 supports your camera, the camera will appear in the Photo application, which you can find under the Photo icon on the home screen. If the PS3 doesn't support your camera, you may still be able to transfer your photos to the console via an external card reader.
