PS3 Games for Cognitive Development

Educational video games have been around almost as long as the medium itself. Although the PlayStation 3 advertises many adult titles, the system also develops a number of educational titles as well. Some PlayStation 3 titles are developed strictly for educational purposes, whereas others blur the line between entertainment and education.
  1. Brain Challenge

    • "Brain Challenge" is a mental exercise game available from the PlayStation Store. Similar to Nintendo's "Big Brain Academy," "Brain Challenge" is divided into four different categories: Logic, Math, Visual and Focus. You complete the puzzles to increase your prowess in the four categories. The PlayStation 3 also features a Creative Mode, where you can doodle or shoot fireworks. "Brain Challenge" also features charts to track your cognitive progress and improvement.

    Jeopardy!

    • Jeopardy!, the famous television quiz show, is also available for download from the PlayStation Store. In "Jeopardy!" the game, you create a customized avatar and complete against computer-based characters. The game is almost identical to the television show, with thousands of different clues and dozens of categories. The difficulty level on "Jeopardy!" is similar to the quiz show, so it is best suited for adults and older teenagers.

    EyePet

    • "EyePet" is a virtual pet simulator that is bundled with the PlayStation Move. The "EyePet" is an excellent educational game for children. Using the PlayStation Move, players feed, care for and clean their virtual pet. As the main aim of the game is to keep the pet happy and healthy, "EyePet" teaches responsibility and how to properly care for animals.

    3D Dot Game Heroes

    • "3D Dot Game Heroes" is an adventuring game where everything is comprised of tiny blocks. All in-game objects, including the avatar, are made with small blocks. Players can create their own avatar and in-game objects in the game's object editor. Suitable for older children, the game involves manipulating the blocks to solve puzzles and continue the adventures. Players must use their own creativity to succeed in the game.
