How to Set Up a Static IP on a PlayStation 3

When connecting a device to the Internet, whether the device is a computer or gaming console, your Internet service provider assigns you an Internet Protocol (IP) address. The IP address is your online ID and identifies you on a network. You can have a dynamic IP address, which changes when you begin an Internet connection, or a static IP address, which is a permanent address used to identify your device. A static IP address is helpful if you need to identify the device frequently, especially on a local network. You can change your PlayStation 3 IP to static address instead of dynamic one.

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn on your PlayStation 3.

    • 2

Select "Settings" and choose "Network Settings."

    • 3

Navigate to "Internet Connection Settings." Take note that your system will disconnect from the Internet if you are currently connected when you modify the settings.

    • 4

Choose "Custom" for your setting method.

    • 5

Specify whether you are connecting wirelessly or using an Ethernet cable.

    • 6

Select "Auto Detect" for the Ethernet operation mode and choose "Manual" for the "IP Address Setting."

    • 7

Enter the address to use for your static IP. Refer to the IP address for your router and keep the numbers the same, except for the last three numbers, which you should set to your static number. Choose a number that is easy to remember, such as 125 or 150.

    • 8

Enter "255.255.255.0" for your subnet mask and enter your router's IP address. Linksys routers typically use "192.168.1.1." Consult your router's documentation if you're unsure of it.

Select "Manual" for the DNS Settings. Consult your Internet Service Provider documentation or call them to get the two DNS servers to use. You can also use the default public DNS servers of "208.67.222.222" and "208.67.220.220." You may experience faster speeds with your ISP's DNS servers.

Select "Automatic" for the MTU and choose not to use a proxy server. Enable UPnP. View the summary of your settings and press "X" to save your new settings.
