How to Change the HD Cable on a PS3 Back to a Regular TV

Sony's PlayStation 3 gaming console can put out either a high-definition signal using an HDMI cable or a component audio-video cable or a standard-definition signal using a composite audio-video cable. There is a simple, quick way to switch from high-definition to standard-definition.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the HDMI cable, if present, from the back of the PS3. The HDMI port is in the approximate middle of the back of the PS3 and will be labeled "HDMI OUT."

    • 2

Disconnect the "component" audio-video cable, if present, from the back of the PS3. The component cable will be plugged into a port labeled "AV MULTI OUT" near the right side of the back of the PS3. The other end of the cable will terminate in five colored connectors.

    • 3

Connect the appropriate end of the "composite" cable, which comes with the PS3, to the "AV MULTI OUT" port on the back of the PS3.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the composite cable, which terminates in three colored connectors, to the standard-definition television, making sure the colors of the connectors are matched to the colors of the port on the television.

    • 5

Turn on the television and PS3. Use the controls on the television or the television's remote to set the television to the proper input.

    • 6

Check the television screen to see if video is being displayed properly. If so, you may begin using the PS3. If not, turn off the PS3. Then press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps. This will reset the video output to standard-definition and should allow you to use the PS3.
