How to Cast Magic in Demon's Souls

Players can cast two types of spells in "Demon's Souls" for the PS3. "Miracle" spells are derived from white magic and can be used to cast healing and protective spells such as cure and regeneration. "Magic" spells, on the other hand, are derived from black magic and are used mainly to cast offensive spells like weapon enchants and fire-based attacks. However, before you can start casting spells in "Demon's Souls" you need to defeat the first boss and upgrade your faith and magic stats.

Instructions

  Travel to Boletarian Palace and defeat the first boss, Phalanx. Phalanx is a lead demon's soul that looks like a mound of shields with spears sticking out of it. Fire-based attacks are especially effective against it.

  Talk to The Monumental after defeating Phalanx. The Monumental can be found in the Nexus, sitting in front of a lit candle on a balcony above the archstones. Once you've spoken with him, you can unlock the other four archstones in the Nexus.

  Visit The Maiden in Black. Although The Maiden in Black moves around throughout the game, you can often find her sitting next to the last archstone you entered. Talk to her to upgrade your stats using the souls you've collected from fallen enemies.

  Upgrade both your faith and magic stats to at least level 10. You might need to go out and kill some more demons to get enough souls to upgrade.

  Obtain a talisman. A talisman is required to cast miracle spells. You can find a Talisman of God in front of the gates to the Shrine of Storms just behind the tree on the right.

  Obtain a catalyst. A catalyst is required to cast magic spells. You can find a Wooden Catalyst in the Boletarian Palace at the top of the first tower on the bridge.

  Learn miracle spells. To learn the basic miracle spells, go to the Nexus and talk to The Disciple of God who is in the area behind the blacksmith. The Disciple of God can teach you the miracle spells Heal, Antidote, Escape and Hidden Soul. You will need to equip a talisman before you can use miracle spells.

  Learn magic spells. To learn the initial magic spells, go to the Nexus and talk to The Freke's Apprentice in the area behind the world five archstone. The Freke's Apprentice can teach you the magic spells Soul Arrow, Flame Toss, Protection, Enchant Weapon, Demon's Prank, Water Veil and Cloak. You will need to equip a catalyst before you can use magic spells.

  Cast spells. After equipping a talisman or catalyst to your right hand, you can cast a set spell on a selected target by pressing the "R1" button. You can cycle through your available spells by pressing "Up" or "Down" on the directional pad.
