Game on PS3 Does Not Launch

Unlike previous PlayStation systems, the PS3 allows you to play games in high-quality, high-definition formats. Although you have a world of games at your disposal to choose from, occasionally you may run into some playback problems. Causes of playback problems may vary, but you can narrow them down and solve them safely and often easily.
  1. Disc Problems

    • More often than not, games won't launch if the discs are dirty, severely scratched or damaged. In some cases, dirty or scratched discs may run for a little while or to a certain level and then freeze. Discs are extremely sensitive to dirt and fingerprints and will scratch easily if they are left lying around. If a particular disc is dirty, wiping it gently with a soft, clean cloth from the center moving outward can improve its performance. Solvents and abrasive solutions, such as glass cleaners, can damage the data on the disc, so using them isn't recommended. As much as possible, try to avoid touching a game disc's shiny surface. Store discs in their cases when you're not using them. If a particular disc is heavily scratched or damaged, you'll probably have to replace it.

    System Incompatibility

    • According to Sony, some discs and media have regional or territorial restrictions and may not work with your system. Region codes are usually assigned to discs and systems based on the geographic location where the disc is distributed. For example, if you're using an American region on a PS3 gaming console, the system won't recognize a Region 2 disc designed for a different location. Before inserting a game disc into the tray, always check the system-compatibility information on the back of the case and make sure it's compatible with your gaming console.

    Overheating

    • if you don't store your gaming console properly during game play, the system may overheat and shut off unexpectedly. When the system begins to overheat, a game may fail to launch when you insert a disc into the tray. The PS3 gaming console has vents that allow air to cool down internal hardware, such as the processing unit. If the system is placed inside a closed cabinet or in a location that blocks the vents, the unit will overheat, and games will not launch. To prevent your system from overheating, store it in an open and well-ventilated location. If the system is overheating, you must turn it off and let it cool down for a while. Keep the console at least 4 inches away from a wall and away from carpets or rugs with long fibers.

    Parental Control

    • The PS3 system includes a parental-control feature that allows you to set restrictions on what users can play. It's primarily designed to protect children from mature games. It allows you to limit playback using a preset parental-control level. Many games are packaged with a rating symbol that indicates the age group that is appropriate to play the game. If a game has a mature rating and doesn't fall within your parental control's levels, it won't play. When you insert an unacceptable game disc into the tray, the PS3 displays a parental warning message. If you're the administrator of the gaming system, you can always adjust parental-control settings when you want to play certain games.
