Study the maps. Knowing the layout of each map is important if you want to become a skilled player. By knowing every detail of a map, you know the best ways to get away from enemies and where you can plan an attack. It also allows you to know where the power weapons are located and how to get to them. Getting the power weapons before your enemy gives you the opportunity to acquire easy kills.
Practice with every weapon in the game. A skilled player knows how to use each weapon and when to use it. While some weapons are great for long range battles, they are not as effective up close. By knowing each weapon's pros and cons, you can become skilled in all types of combat.
Communicate with your teammates. While it is important to be skilled at playing on your own, nothing beats great teamwork. By calling out for help and telling your teammates where the enemies are located, you don't have to fight each enemy alone. Stay close to your teammates and take out enemies together. This helps you stay alive and kill more enemies, improving your chance of winning.
Move in unpredictable ways and avoid running in straight lines, a common practice for bad players. When you run in a straight line, enemies can easily line up their shot and rarely miss. Continually look around as you walk to find enemies. When you see an enemy and begin battle, begin strafing by moving your character quickly left and right. This makes it difficult for the enemy to hit you and can help you win the battle.
