How to Edit the GTA IV Common RPF File

"GTA IV," or "Grand Theft Auto IV," is a sandbox-style adventure game in which the player assumes the role of Niko Bellic. Players can steal vehicles, buy guns and complete crime-related missions to earn money. The common.rpf file is a game data storing file, which includes information about weapons, vehicles and characters. Editing the common.rpf file allows players to change the stats of game items, to make them more powerful or give them better-looking models. To edit the common.rpf file you will need various editing tools for "GTA IV."

  Download the GTA IV Mods tool pack, which includes OpenIV and IV Needle, from "GTA IV" resource websites (see Resources).

  Load the program OpenIV.exe. Click "File" and "Open," navigate to your "GTA IV" installation directory and double-click the common.rpf file. You should see a list of .dat, .xml and .txt files.

  Right-click the .xml format file of the game data you wish to edit and extract the file from common.rpf. For example, if you wish to change a weapon type, right-click the "weaponinfo.xml" file and select "Extract."

  Load IVNeedle.exe and select the editor type that corresponds to the file from Step 3, such as the weapon editor or vehicle editor.

  Click "Load" at the bottom of the editor and choose to load the .xml file from Step 3. Once loaded, click the drop-down menu for "Type" and select the game item you wish to edit.

  Make changes to the file, such as model, speed, fire type, damage type and other stats by typing in the changes in the information fields provided.

  Click "Save" and replace the old .xml file, in the common.rpf, with the new file created in IVNeedle.

  Click "File" and select "Rebuild" to finish the editing process. Load "GTA IV" to test your modifications.
