How to Control Steering With Sixaxis on the PS3

The PlayStation 3 Sixaxis is also known as the Dualshock 3 wireless controller. It the standard controller that comes with any PS3 system. Steering is a key function for racing and flight simulator games. Although there are many games that feature steering in some form, the actual method for steering is essentially the same. Additionally, the controller features an intuitive motion sensor, allowing you to change directions without pushing buttons. Regardless of method, if you can master steering with the Sixaxis in one game, it becomes a transferable skill for similar games.

Instructions

  1. Conventional Steering

    • 1

Hold the controller horizontally with both hands. Lightly place your left thumb over the Sixaxis' left joystick button. This is usually the default component for steering.

    • 2

Accelerate your vehicle. Each game has different controls for acceleration, so refer to your game manual for the appropriate button. The "X" button on the controller's face or "R2" button at the top right corner are commonly used for this. Hold down the accelerator to keep going.

    • 3

Gently push on the left joystick with your thumb. Move the joystick to the left or right, depending on where you wish to go. The controls are very sensitive. Too much pressure will cause a sudden, sharp turn.
