Combat
Learn the basics and you'll survive longer. In combat with enemies, plan ahead. Sometimes it is sufficient to start swinging a sword, but at other times, magic is more useful. Only use a sword if you are sure of beating your opponent, and don't think that endlessly pressing the "R1" button will kill them. If you are unsure of your opponent's strength, use some projectile attacks first - these include magic - and then finish the enemy off with the sword. One reason you can't just keep pressing buttons to kill enemies is because it will use up your stamina. Everything you do in this game uses energy, so it's important to keep your stamina meter topped up and keep an eye on its level.
Character Forms
Choose a character. A Knight is recommended as being the most balanced character. In this game your character has "soul levels." As you progress you turn in other souls to increase your own soul level. When you turn in enough souls to progress to another level, you can choose to improve an aspect of your character. For example, improving your intelligence allows you to cast more spells, and increasing your magic rating allows you to make more powerful spells. If you get killed, you can continue the game in spirit form. This cuts your health meter in half, but your magical attacks are stronger. To return to physical form, you can either defeat a boss demon, or use a Stone of Ephemeral Eyes object. If you find that you are frequently playing in spirit form, find a Cling Ring in the first area of Boletaria castle, as this helps you get back to the physical form.
The Nexus
The Nexus is a hub where you can repair weapons and recharge your powers. You can enter the Nexus for your level through an archstone on the stairway of the Tower of Latria. Look for the archstone nearest to a blue man and climb up until you find a descending stairway that takes you to a character call the Monumental. Every time you complete a level, make sure you visit the Nexus, as different characters turn up here that can help you. Also, when you visit the Nexus, look for Stockpile Thomas. He will look after any items you don't want to take on your next adventure. Beside him you'll find a blacksmith who will make you weapons if you pay him with souls and materials.
Controls
Learn your PS3 controls for the game as well. The left stick controls movement and the right stick controls your camera angle. On the D-pad, "Up" changes the magic and miracles you've learned. Down changes the item you're using, such as healing, knives or bombs. Left and Right on the pad allows you to swap over left and right-handed weapons and shields. Select allows you to send another player a message, or rate another player. Start opens the game menu, and the Circle allows you to sprint, roll and move backwards. When you want to use a weapon, press Square, and Triangle allows you to hold a weapon with both hands. These apply to Western region versions. Check your game region for any differences in these controls.
