My PS3 Controller Is Not Syncing

The PlayStation 3 console and controllers store information about each other so that they can sync quickly the next time you turn the system on. However, if you attempt to use a controller with a different console, you will have to clear the stored sync information. Most other syncing problems can be solved by resetting sync information.
  1. Resetting Sync Information

    • Turn on the PS3 console. Connect the controller to one of the USB ports in the front of the console using the cable that was provided with the controller. The console will automatically reset any sync data for the controller in that port and establish a new sync. If the controller does not re-sync and assign a controller number, contact Sony customer support.

    Assigning a Number

    • The PS3 console will also automatically assign a number to each controller as they are plugged in or turned on. The lights at the top of each controller will indicate the number. If more than one light is on, add the numbers corresponding to the illuminated lights to find the controller number. The PS3 can sync with up to seven controllers simultaneously. Once the controller number is lit with a solid light, the sync is complete and you may begin using the controller.

    Wireless Controllers

    • You can begin to use the controllers without wires at any time by disconnecting the USB cable. There is no need to restart the system with the controllers unplugged to take advantage of wireless capability. The controllers do require a battery charge to operate wirelessly.

    Charging

    • If you receive notification of a low battery, or one of the controllers turns off unexpectedly, plug it back into the console using the USB cable. You may plug or unplug the controllers at any time; there is no need to shut the console down before making changes.
