Connect the external hard drive to the computer with a USB cord.
Click the "Open folder to view files" option on the "Autorun" window that comes up. This shows the folders on the external hard drive.
Click the "New Folder" option on the window with the list of external hard drive folders. Type "PS3." Open the PS3 folder, click the "New Folder" option again and type "GAMEZ."
Unplug the hard drive from your computer and insert it into the PS3's USB port. Insert the "Mafia Wars" game disk into the PS3 Blu-ray drive.
Download one of the backup managers available for the Sony PlayStation 3 from the developer's website. Plug a USB flash drive into your computer and right-click the backup manager installation file.
Click "Copy" from the context menu and right-click the USB flash drive icon on the computer desktop. Click "Paste."
Unplug the USB flash drive and plug it into the PS3's USB port. Select "Install Package Files" on the PS3 menu in the "Games" tab. Select the backup manager from the list that comes up. The backup manager is installed on the PS3.
Select the backup manager you have installed on your PS3 under the Game tab. Highlight the "Mafia Wars" game.
Press the "O" button to install "Mafia Wars" to your external hard drive. There will be two icons of "Mafia Wars." One is the disk and one is the installed version on the PS3.
Eject the disk after the procedure has finished. Select the remaining icon to play "Mafia Wars" on the PS3 without the disk in the optical drive.
