The Sony PlayStation 3 uses Bluetooth technology to connect official Sony controllers to the console. Instead of using a wire to connect to the system, which supplies power to the controller, it runs on a battery pack which must be recharged when it drains. You need to use a USB cord to charge the battery packs, but do not need it while playing the game. Bluetooth also allows you to turn the system on using the controller instead of using the button on the console.
