How to Troubleshoot the Sound With an HDMI From a PS3 to a TV

The PlayStation 3 is Sony's latest video gaming console for use with standard or high-definition televisions. Originally released in Japan during November of 2006, this third generation of gaming systems from Sony features both high quality gaming graphics as well as Blu-Ray DVD playability. If your system is connected to the television through an HDMI cable and you are experiencing sound problems, there are a few things you need to check before contacting Sony.

  Check the connection between your PS3 and television to make sure the HDMI cable is not loose or frayed in any of the sections. If possible, use an alternative HDMI cable to make sure the bad audio connection is not just the cable.

  Plug in the standard definition cables, represented by three colored RCA cables and one S-video cable, and change the audio and video quality to standard on your PlayStation 3 and television. Make sure the problem with the audio is only occurring with the HDMI setup, as problems in both let you know the problem is your console itself.

  Change the video and audio quality back to HDMI on your PlayStation 3 menu and television settings if the problem only appears in HDMI. If you have a problem with your audio on all settings, you have most likely blown your sound card and need to replace it.

  Select the manual audio setup when choosing the HDMI connection in your PlayStation 3's "Sound Settings" menu. Deselect all of the options for sound file format, leaving only the formats that are grayed out and cannot be deselected.

  Exit the setup menu and enter gameplay. Make sure the audio during gameplay of your PlayStation 3 is corrected, otherwise you have a hardware problem. Contact Sony directly for replacement of this part.
