How to Get Through the River in Hades' Temple

Your first experience with the River Styx in "God of War 3" doesn't go very well. After defeating Poseidon, you must swim through the river to your next destination. Along the way, Kratos loses much of his power and health. To gain the ability to swim through the River Styx without damage, you must help Kratos obtain the Soul of Hades. To earn it, you'll have to fight your way through Hades' Palace and do battle with Hades himself.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin the Palace of Hades by moving into the alcove on the right side of the room. Break the scaffolding and pots for Red Orbs and open the chest for Green Orbs if you need them.

    • 2

Locate the wooden cart and push it to the wheel on the left side of the main room. Spin the wheel by interacting with it to open a gate above you. Jam the cart beneath the wheel to hold the gate open.

    • 3

Ascend the tree and jump to the platform on the right side. Move through the gate and defeat the enemies here.

    • 4

Open the Blue Orb chest and head up the ramp on the right side. Follow the corridor to the next room.

    • 5

Raise Persephone's casket by activating the crank. Explore the room; there are some chests up the ladder and at the far left and right corners.

    • 6

Return to the casket when you're finished and press "R1" to interact with the pedestal. This will release a pair of ladders and a group of enemies. Defeat them and climb up the ladder on the left.

    • 7

Locate the lever in the corner and operate it to activate an elevator. Ride down, open the gate and take the cart out from beneath the wheel. Defeat the enemies that appear and load the cart onto the elevator. Ride it back up.

    • 8

Push the cart near the wheel and jump down to the main room. Operate the crank in front of the statue, then climb back up the left ladder. Turn the wheel to close the cuff on the statue's arm, then jam the cart beneath the wheel.

    • 9

Return to the crank and operate it once again. Climb the ladder on the right and turn the wheel to close the other cuff.

    • 10

Approach the altar at the front of the room and interact with it. The casket will swing and break open the statue, granting access to Hades.

    • 11

Begin the fight with Hades by hitting "L1" and "R1" repeatedly to fend off his attack. Try to stay behind Hades during the battle, utilizing Plume of Prometheus and Cyclone of Chaos for some extra damage. Dodge his attacks and try to get in close for an attack with Army of Sparta.

    • 12

Continue damaging Hades until a Quick Time Event becomes available. Follow the button prompts on the screen to detach a piece of flesh. Attack the flesh to prevent it from reattaching.

    • 13

Dodge Hades' new attack by running to the open patch of ground. Stay on the move and do as much damage as you can.

    • 14

Repeat the Quick Time Event when it becomes available again. You will enter a tug-of-war with Hades over the River Styx.

    • 15

Weaken Hades during the tug-of-war by hitting him and alternately dodging his attacks. Hold back on the left analog stick in the meantime to keep from being pulled into the river. Press "Circle" when Hades is weakened to grab him, and press it again to finish the tug-of-war.

    • 16

Continue the attacks during Hades' last form and execute a final Quick Time Event to end the battle. You will receive the Soul of Hades as a reward, and you can now navigate the River Styx without harm.
