How to Do a Firmware Check for a PS3 Game

Sony's PlayStation 3 firmware undergoes occasional updates that adjust settings, fix security holes and address concerns with the system's functions. PlayStation 3 owners should install new updates as soon as possible. A specific game sometimes requires an update. These usually include game patches that fix glitches or other issues. The game developers may require that players download and install these updates before they can resume gameplay, so checking for updates early and often will prevent any loss of game time.

  Perform regular system updates. Game updates can coincide with system updates, so keeping your console up to date is often required when checking game firmware versions. Locate the "System Update" function at the top of the "Settings" tab. Highlight "System Update" and press "X" to check for and install updates.

  Insert your game disc and load the game. Log onto both multi-player and single-player modes to check for firmware updates. A black screen will appear if the game developers have released any updates.

  Select "OK" if a game update screen appears. Wait for the download to complete, then select "Install" to complete the update. Restart your console. You can now play your updated game.
