Things You'll Need
Instructions
Turn off the console and let it rest for several minutes before restarting. It could just be a one-time glitch that takes care of itself.
Update the PS3 Slim firmware by accessing the "System Update" feature in the system's main menu on startup. The Slim will need to be connected online when you do this so it can automatically access the PlayStation Network. Older firmware can sometimes cause system instability and result in unpredictable behavior such as freezing. Sony recommends checking for new firmware regularly.
Take out the game disc and wipe it down with a soft cloth from the center of the disc to the outer edge in a straight line to remove debris that could be interfering with the Slim's lens. Never wipe the disc in circular fashion because this can cause dust, hair and other debris to be embedded into the tracks of the disc, resulting in more performance problems. Try a different game to see if the freezing continues.
Spray a can of compressed air into the disc area of the PS3 Slim and its vents as well to help remove dust buildup. Because of the smaller design, the PS3 Slim relies on more precise function from its components so dust accumulation can cause greater problems for it. Use a vacuum and attachment to suck dust from the vents as well but don't do this on the disc area since it could traumatize the lens.
Ventilate the PS3 Slim by placing it off the ground and onto a crate that allows airflow underneath it. The smaller size means the fan may be less effective in keeping the system cool when compared to the full-size version and this could result in freezing. Place a fan on the system as well to assist with the cooling process.
Tilt the Slim on its side. This adjusts both the disc and the lens and can correct occasional disc reading errors such as freezing.
Contact Sony at 800-345-7669 if the problem persists because your Slim may be faulty or require repair. A Sony representative can inform you if your Slim is still under warranty or what steps you should take to get the system repaired.
